mailbox en rouge

i was in the french-speaking canadian capital of ottawa last weekend and these red mailboxes were all over the place, especially near the parliament. they're so red and conspicuous, it's like they're begging you to send a postcard back home--which i did--but since everything in canada is so expensive and tax-laden, i only got to send a few. i wrote my postcards while waiting for the "lady dive" amphibian bus tour to start driving us around downtown ottawa. after the tour, i promptly dropped my pre-stamped postcards ($1.49CAN+tax) into one of these red mailboxes.

Nice mailbox picture. Sending postcards has really become expensive.

Lady dive amphibian tour? That sounds super duper cool! I'm really intrigued. I will have to google that:) Hooray for Canadian red mailboxes! Happy PFF!

Like Marie I am intrigued by those Lady Dive Amphibian tours. It made my imagination spinning. Did the bus dive into a canal, and was it only for posh ladies? And why are there so many postboxes around the parliament of Ottawa? It has to be a beautiful building or are there many postcard shops near the building? Questions, questions. Thanks for sharing.

marie and bob: the name really has a royal ring to it, doesn't it? hehe. the bus first drives you around downtown ottawa to see the landmarks, then you plunge into ottawa river to see the parliament from the water. the rideau canal is nearby but we didn't go there.

it's a fun ride, cost us $30CAN each. the tour guide we had was bilingual so he talked in french and english.

there are lots of souvenir shops across the parliament selling postcards, and in fact, the post office itself is near the parliament. being the capital city, lots of people there must do a lot of mailing...including the tourists.

i hope i satisfied your curiosity! :)

Wow...$1.49!
That aint cheap....but it sure beats (driving or flying and) hand delivering your postcard yourself.

Have a beautiful weekend.

I visited my sister in Canada a good few years ago and for some reason I didn't notice the red letter boxes. Perhaps I wasn't so mail orientated in those days, but I did buy postcards. :)

I brought postcards back from Ireland last month and mailed most of them from the US because it was so much cheaper. It's that just rotten of me! I wanted to mail out about 30 post cards, so I mailed 5 from Ireland and 25 from home. At least the postcards were from Ireland!

I miss seeing the old "retro" mailboxes. It's interesting how these are already non-existent in the Manila...
I can only think of two probably reasons:
- postal office is too unreliable people would rather send email.
- Mailboxes were stolen and sold for scrap metal :D
