one of our professors who claims to be as old as the UST main building (75 years old) provided us with an interesting trivia. he said that that particular building is the safest structure inside the campus in case of an earthquake. the building was held together by metal in between so that when the tremor shakes it up, it won't wobble but would be pulled outward against the shaking motion. he also said that the spanish priest who supervised the construction made sure that the sand used did not contain any salt, so that when it was summertime, the cement will not crack and deteriorate as a result of the salt melting. he said the priest "tasted" the sand for any salty content. pretty clever.
